Five Colorful Fall Hikes on the Eastern Seaboard
Any East Coasters out there in search of a good fall hike? Although often overshadowed by steeper treks and higher peaks on the West Coast, the East Coast is home to an abundance of world-class hikes. From the rocky coastline of Maine to the southern summits of Georgia, we've rounded up five colorful hikes on the eastern seaboard to explore this fall.
1. Mount Katahdin, Maine
While this trail is not for the faint of heart, adventures from near and far set out to conquer the summit of Katahdin. Mount Katahdin is the highest mountain in Maine and marks the start of the 2,000+ mile Appalachian Trail.
2. Blue Hill, New York
Don't let the "hill" in the name fool you; Bull Hill is no doubt a mountain. This moderate to hard-level climb is a hop away from New York City, making it a popular weekend destination for those seeking a city break. Jump on the Hudson line from Grand Central Station and get off at the Cold Spring stop for a heart-pumping workout and unobstructed views of the infamous Hudson Valley.
3. Mount Rogers Trail, Virginia
At 5,792 feet, this nine-mile, out-and-back hike boasts the highest peak in the state of Virginia. It offers stunning views of the Appalachian mountains, and you can spot dozens of wild ponies peacefully roaming the rolling hills.
4. Lower Cascade Falls, North Carolina
If you're in North Carolina and looking for a hike the whole family can enjoy, Lower Cascade Falls at Hanging Rock State Park comes highly recommended. We love it for its easy access to a gorgeous waterfall and swimming hole (hello, polar plungers!).
5. East Palisades Trail, Georgia
Located just 30 minutes north of Atlanta, the East Palisades Trail is a moderately challenging hike alongside the Chattahoochee River's Palisades section. With stunning river views, high-elevation overlooks and a bamboo forest, it's no wonder this is one of the most popular hikes in the metro area. Pro-tip: adrenaline junkies can rent a kayak for the day and attempt its Class 1 and 2 whitewater rapids.
